Self-seeking is always looking for ones own advantage. A self-seeking person acts with the ulterior motives of the own profit. There is a very thin line between self-seeking and ordinary self interest.
We need to have a healthy interest in ourselves. When self interest is linked with esteem it can’t act self-centered.
Esteem is the opposite of self-seeking. Esteem and being self-centered never work together. When we give esteem to somebody we don’t do it with the ulterior motives of getting esteem for ourselves. If we did it with selfish motives the esteem wouldn’t be authentic and wouldn’t be felt as genuine by the other person.
Genuine esteem is given for free. We give it because we want to acknowledge somebody. When we give esteem to somebody we are detached from selfish thoughts and wishes. This means living esteem prevents us from being self-seeking.

With a mix of humor, candor, and compassion, he reveals how, years before his marriage, his self-obsession led to a downward spiral of addiction and depression, culminating in a suicide attempt at the age of twenty. Reflecting on the love and support he experienced in the aftermath, as well as on the lessons he learned from a difficult missionary stint in Russia, his time as a youth leader in the Arizona desert, his marriage, and even a story his father read to him as a child, he shares his deep conviction that the only way you can find your life is to give it away to others. Your Life Isn’t For You was recently named the Gold Medalist for Inspirational Memoir in the 2015 Living Now Book Awards!

Congratulations on a job well done! Thank you for the courage to share a very important message with all of us that in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of life, we so often forget, and that is “Our Life Isn’t For Us.” True living is not found in self-glorification or self-gratification, but rather in loosing ourselves in the service of others and realizing that our lives are best lived when we are willing to put our selfishness aside and view the lives of others as more important than our own. I will highly recommend this book to all of my friends and associates. Definitely A MUST READ!!
