Self-esteem and group pressure
Posted by Cecilia under: Education; Philosophy .
Group pressure is something each of us experience at least once in our life.
The time in life when group pressure is most significant is during our teenage years.
Succumbing to group pressure is a negative expression of wanting to be accepted by a group. This is a very social and natural drive in us.
How can we handle group pressure without losing our unique identity?
The answer is obvious: with a healthy self-esteem we can experience our desire to be accepted by a group without giving up our self-confidence. A high self-esteem carries high self-confidence. This confidence tells us that we’re accepted by others by being ourselves.
The better we know and acknowledge ourselves the better we can deal with group pressure and keep ourselves out of its possible negative effects.
It’s obvious how you can encourage a teenager who is still searching for their identity. Give them esteem without condition.

I think everybody has to understand that a group can achieve way more than any individual can. You have to sacrifice something in order to gain by the group effort. It’s not easy at all. That’s the beauty of the group effort that they together can go for their chosen goals. Each individual is equally important for the success of the group, everybody has to participate and do the best they can to support each other.
